From Riches to Rags is the new reality show following Lily
Allen and her sister Sarah as they try to set up a business, in the specific a
vintage clothing shop enabling less fortunate young ladies to hire the gown of
their dreams. The much anticipated first episode was aired on Channel 4 last
Tuesday.
Not sure Lily will be too pleased to read yet another
article about it, but the truth is, it’s been a recurrent topic this week in
every elevator and near every coffee machine, especially those music industry
related. Not talking about it would be like that pink elephant in the room...
After the singer herself asking her fans not to watch as she found the
whole thing ‘embarrassing’, was legit to wonder if this was a step towards
Allen’s comeback or the final tombstone on her grave. Probably, Lily was the
first one waiting for a verdict.
Lily dear, you can be reassured: what I heard was in fact so
far pretty positive. You came across more ‘real’ than any reality show. The way
you admit you have no idea of what a ‘normal’ girl would spend on clothes is
disarming, and hopefully your statement regarding being a different person now
means we will see you throughout the series learning a bit more about the real
world.
We also hope you will learn not to do business with your
sister – probably the most despised popstar relative in the world at the
moment, right next to the Jackson family – and finally, that after going
through all this your next New Look
collection will be cheaper…
It’s nice to see a human side to someone like Lily Allen,
and by that I don’t mean her personal stuff – again disclosed by the evil
sister. It’s also interesting to see, while we’re trying to swim away from
recession, that money on its own is not enough to start a business. It’s
educational to see how quick it can disappear from your bank account.
Yes, our young princess may come across like a spoilt child
with no touch on the reality pulse, but it’s the first episode and she’s conscious
about it and trying to learn. Putting this side of her out there took some guts,
and there are tons of young people losing control of their credit card limit
without having stardom revenues.
One of the few occasions where one of the young rich and
famous properly steps up to the role model side of their job. Well done… We
still want you back on the kind of stage you belong to though!
