MEGADETH - Rust In Peace (LIVE DVD)

Shout Factory - 2010

It has been a little while since I have truly seen Megadeth storming the global music scene. After realising they would be releasing ‘Rust In Peace’ Live DVD, I simply had to get hold of a copy. Being considered one of the ‘best metal albums of all time by fans and critics alike’ it is clear that Mr Mustaine is set to dominate the charts and indeed the world on the official release of this exquisite live DVD of the full album.

Scanning down the track listing, you see favourites such as ‘Hangar 18’ ‘Holy Wars’ ‘Lucretia’ ‘Tornado of souls’ and many more. You know the score, it’s epic. Truly epic. Placing the DVD in the player, the anticipation just sitting on my sofa was enough, let alone if I had been given the opportunity to see them live on the day! The crowd were riotous with excitement at what they are about to witness. Dave walks out onto the stage with his RIP album cover custom guitar, which looks breath-taking. His power and command over the crowd sees the audience raise their arms in approval, whilst cheering and screaming with eyes that stare at their idols on stage. With the simple phrase ‘Good evening. You all know why we’re here right?....’ Dave opens up with the monstrous riff from ‘Holy Wars... The Punishment Due’ which if I am totally honest improves with each listen (and I have listened to this MANY times).

The band is on form, producing and demonstrating some of the very finest riffs and licks on the planet. It makes you realise how there are no upcoming artists who create the same musical and lyrical arrangements as the old school rock and metal kings – why is that? (that is rhetorical by the way, because I figured that nobody could possibly do it justice). Anyway, it wasn’t until Hangar 18 arrived that I truly remembered the spirit of the original RIP album and the growth of Megadeth since that point in time.

Let me also mention that this gig marks the return of original bassist Dave Ellefson to the line-up of stunning musicians, including Shawn Drover (Drums), Chris Broderick (Guitar), alongside the maestro Mustaine. So now to continue with the review, let me discuss a few highlights (amongst many)...

‘Five Magics’ demonstrates and exposes the beautiful, intriguing melodies which Megadeth have always possessed within their material. Whatever tone and effects Mustaine has put in place for his guitars, they are awe inspiring and mind-blowing. Wow, that sweet sound cuts through the mix perfectly and provides the perfect hook for the audience to take hold of and go wild. ‘Lucretia’ and ‘Tornado of souls’ follow in quick succession with impressive results; giving a true insight into what a truly accomplished band can achieve when they commit themselves. It really made me appreciate what a fantastic band Megadeth were/are/will be for years to come.

A signature ddrum kit with toxic waste symbols  stands out on the stage as Drove pounds with all his might. Chris Broderick also demonstrates that he is quite the gifted guitarist, keeping up with his counterpart Mr Mustaine and sharing equal lead work, including some particularly complex solos.

Ending with ‘Rust In Peace... Polaris’ it marked what felt to me like a truly stunning set. I am genuinely surprised that more bands don’t do more full length album’s in a live setting AND actually record them and release them on DVD. What a fantastic music box collection it would be to have each album transferred to a small venue packed with fans; filmed around the world! At least, that is my idea of a perfect music collector’s purchase.

I can already hear a handful of individuals questioning where those ‘other’ hit records are. Well, fear not friends because included as Bonus footage are a selection of songs from the same concert, which did not appear on the original RIP album. Songs include: Skin O’ My Teeth, In My Darkest Hour, She-Wolf, Trust, Symphony Of Desctruction, Peace Sells, Holy Wars (reprise). A true spectacle in musical talent! This DVD will have your jaw on the ground throughout. BUY IT NOW! (or when it’s released!)

10/10
