Toilets are the last bastion of American freedom

TRAGEDY STRIKES IN SOUTH PARK

as season 16 premieres with a double bill
MARCH 23rd from 10PM only on COMEDY CENTRAL UK

by Cristina Massei

South Park is back with its grotesque satire of the American culture, and it all starts with Clyde’s mum obsessively trying to educate the kid to put the toilet seat down. Clyde of course ignores her, until she falls down the toilet and dies. And this is just the beginning.

On the background the eternal fight between sexes on the infamous toilet seat debate, the Government takes over in a cross between nanny state and that American love for uniforms and sterile exercise of power; Michael Moore’s theory of fear exposed in Bowling for Columbine immediately comes to mind. The Toilet Safety Administration starts with toilet safety belts, to continue with metal detectors, cameras and fully clothed TSA officers presiding people’ biological functions.

It’s time then to attack the sadly well established suing culture when the matter ends in a federal courtroom, as a dodgy lawyer tries to get compensation for Clyde first and then for the taxpayer from the defunct inventor of the ‘toilet machine’.

What always strikes me about South Park is how its storylines can be so unreal yet so totally realistic, and what keeps attracting me to this series is the opportunity to have a laugh even when staring human stupidity right in the face. It made it to the 16th series and rightly so: may South Park continue and may toilets remain America’s last bastion of freedom. At least the toilets.

South Park fans can watch Season 16 premiere episode Reverse Cowgirl from Saturday March 17th on Virgin Media TV On Demand and Virgin Central, and on Sunday March 18th on Sky Anytime. The episode will be available to download from iTunes on Saturday March 17th.
