Interview with WE ARE THE OCEAN

By Alessia Cifali

Let’s start with a little introduction of the band, for those people out there who don’t know you yet.

Dan Brown: We are We Are the Ocean from London; we have been around for about 4 years and we are now here on tour with the Blackout!

Your last album “Go Now and Live” has recently been re-released; it features an extra CD in which you perform acoustically for the first time. Did you find it difficult to play in such a different way than usual? (note: the album was first released in April and the second release was last 31/10/11. The acoustic performance was recorded at London’s Bush Hall)

Liam Combry: Sure! At first it wasn’t easy but we gave ourselves the task to do it and it was something we enjoyed at the end of the day
Dan: We like to push ourselves; we have never done an acoustic show before so we thought it would be cool to do it

I personally really liked it.

Dan and Liam: Thank you very much

Dan: You think it is something that can put you off, but we received lots of good feedback from it, which is very positive and it makes us very happy

Are you planning to write and record another album soon?

Liam: Yeah we definitely are

Dan: we always write stuff even when we are on tour
Liam: we will be demoing soon again
Dan: Yeah, we just need some time off from touring.

I read that you were meant to go to the US next month...

Dan: Yeah we should have, but the band (Dance Gavin Dance) has announced they are on hiatus now so we had to postpone to probably next year. We really want to come out with another album by then

You have been touring with lots of bands in the past; personally I have seen you many times, which is the best band to tour with?

Liam: the most enjoyable...
Dan: The Blackout! Are really fun!
Liam: Yes they are

Dan: We have done a few tours with them now and we know them pretty well. Deaf Havana are good too and Canterbury (note: Canterbury are also touring with the Blackout at the moment). They are all great guys, you know. Young Guns as well.
Those are all great British bands. We also toured with You Me at Six. Basically we enjoyed touring with all of them.

What’s the highlight of this tour so far?

Liam: Birmingham for me!
Dan: The Birmingham show was probably one of the best but also Manchester last night was really good

Liam: Yes, Manchester was great
Dan: Birmingham has been the best so far, but to be honest the whole thing (tour) has been great we had the chance to perform in so many cool places
Liam: It’s been a pretty exciting tour.
Dan: We also went to towns where we hadn’t played that much recently, such as Hull or Edinburgh. Lincoln for example, we never actually played there before. It is cool to get the chance to see so many places.

It sounds great! I wanted to ask you something about the music industry, what is your view on the rise of MP3 and the whole modernization of this business?

Dan: The music industry has been changing and it has been changing for years. We just need to start accepting that. That is the way technology goes and that is the way kids are getting music these days.
They can get the music in different ways, they can wait for it to be released and going to the shop and buying it, but they can also get everything straight away from their computer.
The new technology permits also to release stuff much quicker and I think it is all just about making it as easy as possible for kids to buy the music from reliable and legal sources, such as iTunes or Amazon. Because in the end there are lots of places where you get things for free and illegally. It is not easy to convince kids to put their money into something. When they buy it legally they should feel it as a reward.

I have to agree, making it easier for people to buy music online is possibly the only way to also control the market and the revenues for both bands and major labels.

I’d like to go back now, and ask you if you have any plans to tour as headliners soon?

Dan: We will, but not anytime soon. This one is probably going to be the last UK tour for this Album campaign because then we will spend lots of time in the States in the first half of next year and then finally working on the next album

Do you find it different to perform for a UK crowd compared to an American crowd?

Dan: We haven’t done that much in the States, so it is hard to tell but definitely. We have our biggest fan base here so when we have the chance to tour in places like Australia and Europe, like what we are going to do this week, it is definitely different and we have to win over lots of fans. We don’t want to try too hard but we love the idea of gaining more fans.

Have got a message for your fans?

Dan: Well I guess just THANK YOU for the support! Thanks for buying the album and for coming to our shows. We hope to see you all very soon
