X-Men First
Class was a hugely anticipated movie and was expected to be a follow up in the
origins series after X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Instead, what we have is a decent
film that is a stand alone; if you watch this chapter looking for it to follow on
directly from X-Men Orgins or the trilogy, you will be sorely disappointed.
This is
just me giving the writers and directors the benefit of the doubt here: either
they aimed to make a completely new selection of films from an already vast
franchise or they messed everything up and have created a film that could not
possibly follow on. For the sake of this review I will be taking the stance
that this is a stand alone film and potentially the start of a new trilogy of
X-Men.
The film
follows the idea that the Mutants gained there powers through radiation and
therefore would be immune during a nuclear war; unlikely, but
something that won't effect how you view the film, just one thing you will think
twice about. So the story shows one group of mutants in an attempt to ignite a
nuclear war between Russia and America and another group of mutants - later to
be known as X-Men - trying to stop them. This is the general plot of the
film, nothing new but completely ridiculous.
The entire
movie is a flurry of inaccuracy and misplaced time slots that can't be
overlooked, the story is vague and unexplained and the concept of this being
the ‘First Class’ will not appeal to many fans of the comic book. As mentioned
above, the only thing saving this film is the idea that it will spawn a new
trilogy instead of trying to tie in the other films.
